  • Leaving Noom

    After six months of Noom for losing weight I’m leaving it. Noom is great for starting a diet and exercise tracking habit. Once the habit is in place there are better apps for continuing.

  • Be Prepared!

    I am not a prepper. In general, you’re not going to need it. It’s expensive and heavy, the people pushing it are probably ripping you off, and if something really bad happens you’re probably still hosed.

  • Speak, memory

    A favorite class I took in my computer science studies was a cognitive science elective in the ATLAS institute. Taught by the brilliant Michael Eisenberg it gave a broad overview of cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and human computer interaction.

  • Reject the frame

    A long time ago (2010) at a job far away (Colorado) my boss handed my coworker a laptop with a virus on it, but also with data for an important client. My coworker took the laptop and spent hours removing the virus and making sure that no traces of it remained and that he had saved all the files he could. He was proud of his work and handed the laptop back to the boss.

    As a child I would go into my parents’ front yard in winter and see hundreds and thousands of blackbirds. I learned that they were migrating south, and I imagined the blackbird migration as a huge wall moving south across the entire United States but this is not so. Mississippi is in one of the four major flyways of migratory birds in North America.
